About The Tapera Project

Preserving the Amazon, Supporting Communities
Join Us in Protecting the Amazon with The Tapera Project

In the heart of Amazonas, spanning the vibrant communities of Urucara and Nhamunda, The Tapera Project is launching a vital initiative to safeguard 240,000 hectares of the Amazon rainforest. Our mission is clear: preserve this irreplaceable ecosystem while empowering the local communities that call it home.

Through an innovative REDD+ project, we’re fighting against deforestation and fostering a sustainable future. This project isn’t just about protecting trees— it’s about nurturing the communities and wildlife that depend on this lush, green haven. As we work towards validating and certifying our carbon credits with the Verra registry (VCS & CCB), we’re building the way for 30 years of dedicated conservation efforts, funded by these credits.

Your support can ignite real change. By purchasing our carbon credits, you’re not just contributing to an environmental cause; you’re becoming part of a movement that values harmony between humanity and nature. Every contribution, big or small, fuels our collective journey towards a thriving future for our planet and its people.

Let’s create together a legacy of harmony and health for the Amazon—a legacy of sustainability that will enrich future generations. Act now, and be a part of a story that matters. Join The Tapera Project by buying our carbon credits and make a difference that will last a lifetime.

Objectives and Impact

Greenhouse Gas Reduction

Upon project completion, it is projected that over 28 million tons of greenhouse gases will have been mitigated. Over 30 years, this will result in an average reduction of nearly 1 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.

Biodiversity Conservation

The project supports the rich biodiversity of the Amazon, including its extensive hydrographic network which plays a crucial role in regulating the regional climate and water quality.

Community Development

Through sustainable practices and economic opportunities, the project empowers local communities and promotes environmental stewardship.

In addition to Carbon Credits, we generate:

Environmental Benefits

The Tapera Project conducts detailed monitoring of wildlife, observing and cataloguing the animals that inhabit the adjacent biological communities. The most monitored groups include mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish, with a special emphasis on mammals and birds, which depend on good flora conditions for their full development.

Social Impact

The Tapera Project’s Social and Environmental Responsibility Programme is dedicated to stimulating and strengthening productive activities by carefully considering social, economic, and environmental aspects. Our goal is to foster sustainable local development and we are achieving significant results in this endeavour.

We provide substantial support to five community poles, focusing on the production of guarana and tonka beans. Our efforts are particularly impactful in the areas of Jabote, Santa Helena, Apeuá, and Marajazinho. Through our rigorous and dedicated work, these regions are experiencing remarkable improvements. The Tapera Project’s commitment to these communities is serious and unwavering, ensuring that our initiatives lead to tangible and lasting benefits.

Economic Alternatives

The Tapera Project champions the sustainable exploitation of non-timber products and environmental services, ensuring that the forest remains standing and conserving soil, rivers, streams, and natural habitats. A well-managed forest will continue to offer its riches to future generations, as timber and other products are renewable resources.

We empower the community by providing financial alternatives through the sustainable use of natural resources. By processing forest products, we create economic opportunities without compromising the integrity of the forest. Our processing facilities are strategically located in Urucará and Nhamundá, enabling the community to transform these resources into valuable products that support local economies and promote sustainability.

Achievements to Date

Supporting Local Communities: We assist communities in regulating their land ownership, ensuring secure and recognized property rights..

Forest Inventories: We have documented over 12,000 trees, significantly enhancing our understanding of the local ecosystem.

Technological Integration: We have employed high-definition drones to map over 15,000 hectares, facilitating precise and effective conservation efforts.

Infrastructure Development: We have constructed three houses equipped with internet access to serve as support facilities. These buildings enable better coordination of project activities and can accommodate the technical team as well as visitors.

Local Engagement: We have established a network of local guardians dedicated to promoting and sustaining regional environmental protection.

Next Steps

Biodiversity Research: We will expand our inventories to discover and catalog new species, thereby contributing to global ecological knowledge.

Community Infrastructure: We will enhance local living conditions by constructing additional support homes and engaging more producers in sustainable practices.

Innovative Solutions: We plan to implement essential services such as water collection systems, solar power, and internet access across communities to improve quality of life and sustainability.

Product Standardization and Processing: We will help standardize and process local forest products, providing sustainable income alternatives for communities that previously relied on illegal logging. This initiative will create numerous opportunities for the community.

REDD+ Collaboration in Urucará

We are committed to developing a REDD+ project in Urucará and Nhamundá regions of Amazonas, in partnership with local stakeholders. Our role involves providing project management expertise and technical assistance. Our collaborative efforts focus on implementing conservation measures, monitoring deforestation, georeferencing, and enhancing the capacity of local communities, among other essential actions for successful forest conservation and sustainable management.

We have a well-trained local team responsible for overseeing the area. This team is proficient in topography, inventory, and land demarcation, ensuring comprehensive and effective conservation efforts.

Environmental Challenges and Preservation Efforts

The Amazon faces ongoing threats from energy exploitation, illegal logging, and mining. Our project aims to counter these activities. We are committed to preserving this vital ecological and cultural treasure through collaborative and sustainable strategies.

Supporting Sustainable Development

Revenue from Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) not only supports the project’s financial sustainability but also funds conservation agreements with landowners and the development of a local agro-industry. This approach ensures that the Amazon can thrive economically while retaining its invaluable ecological functions.

Project Location and Importance

The project is located in Urucará and Nhamundá regions of Amazonas.
